Sandy Murray

Mr Sandy Murray, Chief Executive, Tenants First Housing Co-operative

Sandy Murray is Chief Executive of Tenants First Housing Co-operative - the largest Fully Mutual Housing Co-op in the UK. He has held this position since 1993 having previously been assistant director of Social Work with Grampian Regional Council.

He started his working life as superintendent of a model lodging house for 250 men in Aberdeen and had heavy involvement in the field of single homelessness including setting up Langstane Housing Association and Albyn House Association - which provided the first Designated Place in Scotland (an alternative to custody for those arrested for drunkenness). He was a founder member and chair for many years of the Scottish Council for Single Homeless and Aberdeen Cyrenians.

He led the programme to provide a range of new housing and support options to enable the closure of 3 lodging houses and a Night Shelter and subsequently led for Social Work on the closure of a large learning disabilities hospital and the development of a range of community residential and training facilities. 

He is one of the original founders of Fox Lane Market Garden, a social enterprise for adults with learning difficulties.

His private interests include Burnhaven Properties which provides serviced apartments in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Birmingham under The Spires brand and is joint owner of Banchory Gallery Ltd, a social firm set up to provide training and employment opportunities for people with a disability.

He acts as regeneration champion for Aberdeenshire Council and Chair of Aberdeen Homes Forum. He chairs a charity, Grampian Opportunities.
