The language of recovery. The semantic of BiPV project
In order to make a classification of main design strategies that, at scale of building,
constitute the various tendencies of
linguistic characterization
of recovery
intervention
, must be done a specific premised on semantic role of photovoltaics in
relation to its possible expressive potential and scales. A first criterion of reading (Luling
2009) can be the
linguistic recognizability of photovoltaics
in the characterization of
building according to different degrees, ranging from the minimum of mimicry, where its
presence is not perceivable, up to the maximum of the
showy integration
or “non-
integration (collage)”, passing through
moderately recognizable integration
strategy.
A further potential can be recognized also in all those technologically advanced
tendencies, such as interactive media building where the energy is used to make
showing or play of light (Bonomo 2012). A similar classification criterion of
PV design
strategies
(Weller, B et al. 2010), is based on an analysis of the different linguistic levels
(tones) with which it can be
expressed the dialectic relationship between envelope
and PV system
(ranging from minimum degree when the building envelope is
architecturally "submissive" due to the application of "foreigners" active systems,
gradually moves to different dialectic gradients in which the photovoltaic system is
linguistically
"dominant", "integrated" or "subordinate
" in relation to the perception of the
envelope, up to the limiting case where, contrariwise, PV integration is "folded" to a
mimetic-imitative
form to the expression and function of the organism, no longer
recognizable. The implementation of each of these strategies is clearly the result of a
delicate balance, within the project, of a number of architectural requirements (aesthetic
and morphological parameters at cell or module level...) and constructive-technological
factors (type and degree of integration, constructive role).

It is equally clear that, in light of the previous range of expressive significations available,
the presence of a system of values generally eligible of protection, need to regulate the
"linguistic possibilities" of solar systems to a careful reflection on the morphological,
syntactic and semantic role of PV against the previously outlined transformability
scenarios. Therefore integration brings with it a phase of analysis and evaluation of
several
simple units of meaning
, like cell, module or the photoactive material, and a deep
research of compatibility
of their respective forms of " language inflection” (colour,
texture, semi-transparency, ...) visible at the elementary level of constructive component,
equivalent to the "word". Research has had the objective of identifying, in the face of
such strategies already known in literature for new buildings, examples of significant
recovery in relation to the different semantic scales of BIPV, such as synthetized in the
following tabs.
