former. It is not a simple superimposition operation but one of metamorphosis resulting
from the inclusion of a functional space that generates an area that differs from the
preceding ones. The
sunspace locus
displays a new dwelling space identity and should
be considered and studied in its extension towards other areas of the home, as well as in
the extension towards it by the other functional units.
Connotations of the
sunspace locus
as a space that changes and that causes the
other spaces to change
.
The reclassification of the bioclimatic sunspace from technical volume to an area of the
dwelling allows, as we have seen, several different possible configurations of such a
space. The relations between these configurations and the corresponding changes in the
dwelling space produce a plurality of possible identities for the sunspace locus.
With this in mind a purely instrumental classification is proposed in which the sunspace
locus is defined according to whether it is called upon to perform a single function or
whether it is “transformed” by the adjacent areas.

locus “within”.
The sunspace performs a well-defined function with the
sunspace locus
which does not
involve other parts of the dwelling in order to be performed. In this case, the boundary
between
sunspace locus
and the other areas is not cancelled out. This acceptance of
the sunspace area allows no redefinition of self or of the surroundings. It performs the
sole role of containing the activity taking place within this space. The boundary between
the functional units of the dwelling and the
sunspace locus
is crossed only for the
purpose of entering or exiting the latter.

locus “from” and “towards”.
The sunspace is an area of extension of other parts of the dwelling and/or an area that
can be extended towards other parts. It may thus be identified as a space which takes
over the adjoining space, incorporating it and turning it into a larger one – from a
sunspace towards another space – or else is invaded by the extension of a function
performed in a nearby area – from another space towards the sunspace locus.
