One of the peculiarities of Pavia university system is the presence of a large number of
boarding schools. In fact it has 14 university boarding schools: 10 are ruled by the
regional body for the Right to University Education (EDiSU) and 4 are historical buildings
legally recognized by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). These
4 historical boarding schools (Almo Collegio Borromeo, Collegio Ghislieri, Collegio Santa
Caterina da Siena and Collegio Nuovo) enjoy important awards nationally and
internationally recognized, also thanks to the strong link with the University Institute for
Advanced Studies (IUSS).
As we can see from the map below (Fig.4), the spatial distribution of the university
buildings (signed with red circles) follows a very clear structure: they have a
widespread
distribution within the town historical center, and a distribution
in cluster
for the Cravino
engineering campus (in the north-west of the ring road) and for the Chemistry and
Physics complex (in the south-east of the ring road). The university boarding schools
(signed with blue circles) are concentrated mainly in the historical downtown.

buildings owned by the University of Pavia, with the blue ones the university boarding schools.
Purposes and Methods
In the light of these considerations, it is clear that the study of building accessibility and
usability means to consider not only the architectural elements that compose it, but also
the spaces morphology and the functional usability.
In addition, in order to have a framework as complete as possible it is necessary to enter
the single building in the context of the urban and territorial scale, that is to consider not
only the building accessibility, but also the accessibility of the outdoor areas, the road
system and the urban mobility.
