REALL Project Description
The REALL Village consists of 90 semi-detached homes and is sited at the south west
corner of Heriot-Watt University’s Riccarton Campus. They will be occupied by students.
REALL will contain three zones that will be used to run parallel experiments
The Living Laboratory will consist of ten houses, five pairs of semi detached houses built
to 2013 standards. Each construction pair will test construction systems including fabric
weight, insulation, appliance energy rating, resource use and occupancy according to
existing and predicted building standards.

The two Low Carbon Housing Hubs will have 40 lightweight and 40 heavyweight
buildings. The aim of the ‘Lightweight Housing Hub’ is to build timber frame houses to
future 2016 Scottish Building regulations. The houses have the same specification, with
20 of the houses being naturally ventilated and 20 with mechanical ventilation with heat
recovery. The Heavyweight Housing Hub will be similar to the Lightweight Hub, except
