Conclusions
The multiply complex challenges we face is designing ‘fit for purpose housing’ in a
rapidly changing world require multiply complex responses to succeed. Is it possible to
provide these in time to make a difference? We believe that the REALL test facility and
related research programmes, approaches, models and tools offer a unique opportunity
to tie together and validate different approaches and research languages in a single
research facility to provide credible ‘fresh thinking’. Just like the complex village model of
Hawasly and Corne, REALL itself has significant potential to engage and educate the
public, policy makers, the industry and profession and home owners around the world
because it will ultimately provide correct evidence and validated model outputs that are
linkable to the research outputs of wide range of other research fields through the bricks
and mortar of the buildings themselves and the people who occupy them. REALL will not
only produce world class science but will raise environmental awareness and personal
‘buy-in’ to the implementation of ‘socially, economically and environmentally viable’
solutions, in the rapidly transforming markets of the 21
st
century. The required ‘buy-in’ to
make this a world leading facility will importantly come from researchers of all disciplines
who are invited to join us in ensuring that REALL makes a real difference for the future.
