relationships between citizens and the “hardware” of the city suggests that a success
key for taking up this challenge is a novel sense of community, to be built also by means
of the city itself. Sharing energy, infrastructures, spaces and information will be crucial
and, from this perspective, it is important to enhance and increase the social capital of
the city.
The way the city is designed will play a major role. To design such a city a mix of tools
(traditional ones and new ones) will be required. It is to emphasise that the only way to
take up this challenge is considering all the technical issues that have to be taken into
account as a part of a cultural complex domain, where trans-disciplinary approaches are
required.
A new design domain of investigation seems to be how to transform the invisible,
abstract meaning of the smart city into a new aesthetical repertoire for the urban life.
