Also for the optimal configuration for LEED v.4 the LCA has been performed, using data
coming from EPD certificates. This allows knowing exactly the impact value, which is
more significant than an estimated value coming from a LCA performed with database
data.
Conclusion
The research carried out until now allowed us to:
o
determine the critical points of the roofing system of “Le Albere”, both for LEED
and LCA;
o
find the optimal configuration of the roof for maximizing the LEED points
contribution and at the same time for minimizing the environmental impacts;
o
define a methodology for designing the optimal configuration of all buildings sub-
assemblies for achieving a sustainability certification, not only for LEED, but also
for other RSs.
Extending the methodology to all building sub-assemblies of a project allow to identify
which of them can more contribute in terms of point and impact. Only in this way there is
the possibility to make strategic choices aimed not only to achieve a certification, but
also effectively able to reduce the negative environmental impacts, thanks to the
integrated use of these two BSA tools (RSs and LCA).
The introduction of LCA in credit MR1 of LEED v.4 demonstrates that USGBC
community is going along the right direction and, in the future LEED versions, LCA
should be completely integrated and implemented (not only close to structural materials,
but also extended to the whole building).
Future developments of the research will be the extension of methodology to the other
building sub-assemblies of “Le Albere” and the validation of the results with the
application of other RSs.
