The language, from abstract expression and uniquely self-determined, static and
immutable, becomes expression of evolutionary dynamics of building products that
describe the lives of those living them in their performing.
The concept of sustainability, considered in its complex totality, takes place in this
direction by providing answers effectively congruent to the real needs of users, while
putting the house in proper relationship with environmental factors and determining the
right balance between the size of the space, the size of its use and the size of its
physical and psycho-sensory enjoyment.
3.2 Experimental project
Andrea Scorrano
In this context we propose the analysis of an experimental project that relates to an
operation to replace a residential building complex in the city of L'Aquila, owned by
ATER (institution that manages public housing in Italy), severely damaged by the
earthquake. Accurate pre-assessments have ruled out the possible recovery in favor of a
hypothesis of substitution more incisive but globally sustainable, for many reasons: the
extent of damage to structures determined by the earthquake, the poor reliability of the
materials, the inadequacy of the building type compared to the settlement characteristics
of the site, the lack of congruence of existing homes to new housing demand.
The operation to be implemented is that of an overall rethinking of the action aimed at
sustainable urban regeneration and renewal of building typology and functional, in
relation to a physical context of high historical and architectural value: Nearby are the
Basilica of San Bernardino, the historic city walls and Porta Leoni, one of the ancient
entrances to the city.
