The hypothesis of the replacement building is also an opportunity to reflect on the
possible reintegration of the area covered by the project in the city's social circuit flows,
and thus guarantees a physical rehabilitation but also socio-cultural redevelopement.
How then to reconcile the relationship with a context so strongly identified with the need
to ensure to the future users, the public houses that are truly congruent to a framework
of ever-changing needs?
Then the experimental design shown here moves from the desire to overcome the
limitations of a design directed mainly to the definition of spaces standard, to give
answers congruent to the new needs models, exploiting the occasion of the replacement
construction.
Based on the analysis of the behavior and needs of future users, in this case,
unpredictable and not previously defined, we obtain the possible prefiguration of method
of use "desirable" of space, that become "possible" with respect to contextual factors
constraint (architectural and historical, geomorphological, socio-cultural, environmental),
and become “effective” through the real user in its evolution.
The conceptual innovation contained in this evolutionary approach has reflected
substantial in design, production and in the language of architecture.
The project once intended as a technical act traditionally stretched to define certainty
and absolute values, becomes speculative act aimed to express potential, in a game of
continuous interactions between variables and invariant; between the serving system
stable (structure, systems, service equipment) and the system served changing, freely
available, and variously configurable in time.
The location of the invariant is strategic so that the shape and size of user space can
become adaptive to the needs in their continuing evolution.
Figure 6: The variables and invariant space, in retation with usability, variability and sustainability
The project aims to do so primarily to compose the environmental request to facilitate the
maximum exchange with the natural factors (light, air) with the instance of evolutionary
space through a dual action: the creation of “empty environmental spaces”, conceived as
channels of light and air, the concentration of the invariant technology in a single serving
block (technological systems and vertical links), the "externalization" of the structural
systems seismically congruent.
The empty environmental space, configured as a cone with variable section open to the
sky, consists of a spatial network structure in tubular steel, coated with opaque and
semi-transparent panels, in order to balance privacy with the lighting and natural
ventilation.
