User Profile
The energy required to operate a house may depend on the occupants’ structure and
usage patterns related to their behaviour. The requirement of space and water heating is
largely dependent on energy demand which seemingly accounts for a number of factors
such as climatic variations, and building sizes, types and thermal properties in addition to
the human factors. A dwelling with larger rooms may need more energy to heat up the
space. There is a potential for future savings in energy demands of housing use if the
family practises and maintain energy-saving daily life activities. The current design
proposal of ZEMCH109 is based on the monitoring results of a ‘live’ environment—i.e.
NRGStyle’s existing house stock located at 109 Adamton Road South. Over the last
months, water, gas and electricity consumption was monitored using the EWGECO
recording device installed in the NRGStyle house. The following section identifies the
monitoring results.
Energy and Resource Usage Profile
‘EWGECO’ is a device that monitors electricity, water and gas consumption in a house.
Displaying the usage may contribute to increasing the family’s awareness of housing
operation patterns; thus, it may somewhat help reduce energy bills through the users’
energy-saving behaviour (Ewgeco 2012). Once the data is uploaded, the users can
observe the energy use, cost and CO
2
emission levels in detail via the EWGECO
dedicated website called ‘My Ewgeco’ (Fig.5).
